What if the NFL provided a solution to the BCS mess?
I tried. I really tried. I just couldn’t make myself sit and watch another booooooring National Championship game. The first thought that comes to mind is, “Wouldn’t it have been great to see USC vs. Georgia?” This would, in my mind anyway, result in an Illinois vs. Hawaii match up that, hopefully, wouldn’t be over in the first quarter. (Hawaii fan talking here.)
The debate will go on and on about a BCS Playoff, and I really don’t have much to add to the analysts or professionals that stand on each side - the Bowl believers and the Playoff enthusiasts. My two cents is, why not combine the two instead of a BCS Playoff?
I personally like the bowls, so what if a playoff system followed the Bowl games? For example, take the winners of the five BCS bowls: National Championship Game (LSU), Orange Bowl (Kansas), Fiesta Bowl (West Virginia), Sugar Bowl (Georgia), and the Rose Bowl (USC). Since the number of winners equal five teams we would need to add a sixth team, or a wild card team. Let’s choose Michigan from their Capital One Bowl win over Florida.
Obviously you can’t have a playoff system that would make the BCS look bad, so lets have a major sponsor for the six champions: The Tournament of Champions presented by Sports 4E. Ha! I think I’m getting ahead of myself and our business model… Well, if not us, what about the NFL? A lot of these players will be playing on the next season on Sunday anyway, and you could have each game played in an NFL stadium closest to the highest seed’s school.
The tournament would start on Thursday, January 10th, with fifth seeded West Virginia vs. Kansas played at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Result: Although West Virginia gave Kansas a good fight, the Jayhawks’ magical season continued as they advanced to the second round with a 21-20 victory.
The second game of the first round would feature the wild card team, Michigan, vs. USC played at San Francisco’s Monster Park. Result: USC dominance continued as they destroyed Michigan 45-28.
The second round would be a dandy with Kansas at LSU in the Superdome on Thursday, January 17thResult: The Tigers, coming off an impressive victory over Ohio, barely got away from Kansas winning in double overtime 37-31.
How do you top off Kansas at LSU? Well, USC at Georgia in the Georgia Dome on Friday, January 18th!Result: USC kicked a last second field goal to upset the higher seeded Bulldogs of Georgia. What a tournament this is turning out to be! USC wins, 35-34.
The Tournament of Champions presented by the NFL concludes on Sunday, January 27th in Glendale, Arizona one week prior to the Super Bowl.
